Sony Confirms PS5 Pro Won’t Launch In India; What’s Behind The Regulatory Roadblock?

Sony has officially confirmed that the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro will not be launching in India due to regulatory issues. The company explained that in countries like India, where the 6GHz wireless band used by Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) hasn’t been approved yet, the PS5 Pro will not be available. This update was shared in a statement on November 8, leaving many fans disappointed.

First unveiled in September 2024, the PS5 Pro promises a leap in performance compared to the standard PS5, with upgrades like a more powerful graphics chip capable of better ray tracing and AI-powered upscaling. It’s designed to offer an even more immersive gaming experience, particularly for demanding AAA games. With a price tag of $699.99, the console officially launched in select markets on November 7. Sony’s lead PlayStation architect, Mark Cerny, has touted it as the company’s most powerful console ever, claiming it delivers 45% faster graphics rendering than the original PS5.

However, it’s not all bad news for Indian gamers. Sony has also introduced a limited edition PlayStation 5 in India to celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand. This special edition comes in a sleek grey color, paying homage to the original PlayStation that debuted in 1994. Along with the console, a range of matching accessories is also available, giving fans a chance to own a piece of PlayStation history.

For those who already own a standard PS5, the 30th-anniversary edition may not bring many new features to the table. But for anyone looking to buy a new console, it offers a unique and nostalgic twist, blending the rich history of PlayStation with the cutting-edge technology of today.

While the PS5 Pro’s absence in India is certainly disappointing, Sony’s limited edition release is a nod to their long-standing commitment to the Indian market. Despite the regulatory hurdles, the company is still delivering special products to engage its loyal fanbase and celebrate the milestones that have made PlayStation what it is today.
