Narayana Murthy Disappointed That India Switched To 5-Days-Working: ‘I Don’t Believe In Work-Life Balance’

Infosys co-founder Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy doubled down on his contentious advice to the Indian working class to work at least seventy hours a week. Expressing his views at the CNBC event, Mr. Murthy stated that he was disappointed when India switched to a five-day work week from the earlier six working days in 1986. The 78-year-old Indian techpreneur who founded India’s homegrown IT giant Infosys in 1981 along with six others is ranked 634 on the Forbes Real Time Billionaires list with a net worth of $5.2 billion. Other co-founders are also on the billionaires list, including Nandan Nilekani at the 976th spot with a wealth of $3.4 billion, Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan at the 817th spot with a net worth of $4.2 billion, S.D. Shibulal ranked 1559 with a net worth of $2.2 billion, and K. Dinesh at the 1260th spot with a net worth of $2.7 billion. That’s 5 billionaires out of the seven co-founders. And yet the freshmen salary at Infosys remains the same despite recession and inflation over the course of two decades now. Further during his talk, Mr. Murthy stated that he doesn’t believe in work-life balance. He stated the example of PM Modi, who allegedly claimed to work 100 hours a week. Murthy remarked that in India there is no alternative to hard work, even if one is smart. Stating how he entered the office at 6:30 am and left by 8:30 pm, Murthy claimed to work 14 hours a day. He asserted that he was proud of having worked hard all his life, adding

I have not changed my view; I will take it to the grave.”

Reactions poured in with netizens slamming the billionaire businessman for being horribly ‘exploitative’ and puking toxic advice while mistreating Infosys freshmen with peanut-worth salaries. One user aptly dubbed his view as “the only thing more toxic than Delhi air.” Memes followed.
