The Sabarmati Report is actor Vikrant Massey’s first theatrical release since the success of 12th Fail. Massey’s next movie will be the litmus test for him to cement his box-office credentials in Bollywood. However, this wasn’t the case before the release of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 2023 film.
Recently, in an interview with NDTV, Massey was asked about 12th Fail and the chatter about the film not being headlined by a massive star. Interestingly, something similar was also told by Taapsee Pannu in the buildup to Haseen Dillruba that ‘who played the hero didn’t matter in the film.’
Reacting to the same, Massey said, “Honestly, I don’t take offense to these things. It is true that 12th Fail didn’t have a massive star.” Also, Massey clarified that he received positive feedback for his performance, but it didn’t really translate into box-office numbers. “On the commercial angle, I didn’t even have a strong solo film hit the theaters before 12th Fail. So, I understand that such statements weren’t made in a condescending sense. We should healthily agree to disagree. Unfortunately, in social media, and in life, we are seeing how friendships are being broken due to differing political ideologies and tolerance capacities. You just can’t seem to agree to disagree anymore. That is disturbing.”
Meanwhile, The Sabarmati Report, directed by Dheeraj Sarna (who replaced Ranjan Chandel), which also stars Raashii Khanna and Riddhi Dogra, hit the screens on 15 November. Before the release of the movie, Massey disclosed that he received threats due to his involvement in the project, which addresses the Godhra train burning incident. Despite the threats, he affirmed the film’s commitment to presenting factual content, saying that he, along with the team, would handle the situation as necessary.
