Uber has launched a set of new features aimed at enhancing the experience of over one million drivers in India, with a focus on safety, convenience, and transparency. As per the company, these initiatives are designed to provide safer rides, simplify payments, and ensure fairer processes for drivers on the platform.
As part of its commitment to driver welfare, Uber is incentivizing drivers to register on India’s e-Shram portal, a government initiative that builds a social security database for gig and unorganized workers. The company is offering cash rewards to the first 10,000 drivers who sign up, supporting the Indian government’s Code on Social Security.

As for the new features, Uber will now allow women drivers to accept trip requests exclusively from women riders. This optional feature, based on driver feedback, aims to enhance safety and encourage women drivers to work longer hours.
Uber has also announced a new “helmet selfie” feature that requires two-wheeler drivers to take a selfie with their helmet on before starting a trip, ensuring safety. Using real-time verification technology, it prevents drivers from logging in without a helmet. Currently in final testing, the feature will roll out nationwide early next year.
Uber further revealed that riders experiencing delays can now add a tip before the trip starts, encouraging drivers to accept the request quickly. This feature increases the chances of getting a ride and boosts drivers’ earnings.
There’s another audio recording feature for drivers who can now record audio during trips if they feel uncomfortable. The recordings are encrypted and accessible only through a safety report, in compliance with India’s one-party consent law.
Additionally, Uber has revamped its Earnings Hub to provide drivers with a clear, transparent weekly breakdown of their earnings, showing the share allocated to Uber, local taxes, fees, and tips. Additionally, the new Deactivation Review Center allows drivers to review actions taken on their profiles and appeal decisions with supporting evidence. Over 5,000 drivers have been successfully reinstated after submitting valid appeals.
